Senior Software Test Engineer

Location: San Diego, California, United States; hybrid work with on-site presence required at least three days per week

Salary: $107,700–$161,500 per year, plus eligible bonus, commission, and equity opportunities.

What you will do

• Own verification and testing for assigned software features and subsystems within DNA sequencing instruments.
• Shape test strategy by identifying quality risks, improving testability, and defining risk-based coverage.
• Create test plans, test cases, and procedures from product, system, and software requirements.
• Perform hands-on functional, integration, system, and regression testing on physical sequencing instruments in a laboratory environment.
• Validate workflows spanning user interfaces, backend services, hardware abstraction software, firmware, simulators, and instrument hardware.
• Investigate failures and perform root cause analysis with software, firmware, hardware, systems integration, and quality teams.

Requirements

• Five or more years of experience in software quality engineering, instrument software testing, embedded-system testing, or a related discipline.
• Experience independently developing test strategies, test plans, and detailed test cases from technical requirements.
• Experience with subsystem-level verification, requirements traceability, and verification evidence.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, written, verbal, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Familiarity with defect tracking and requirements management platforms such as Jira and Jama.
• Ability to work regularly with physical instruments in a laboratory environment.

Nice to have

• Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools such as Cursor or GitHub Copilot.
• Familiarity with Linux environments and command-line tools.
• Experience with embedded systems, communication protocols, or hardware diagnostic equipment.
• Experience working in a regulated environment, such as medical devices.
