Mechanical Engineer III - HVAC & Utilities

Location: Birmingham, AL, USA; hybrid work model requiring residence within a reasonable commuting distance of Atlanta, GA, with onsite reporting as needed. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

What you will do

• Design HVAC, mechanical utility, piping, and related systems for new buildings, renovations, additions, and process environments.
• Produce load calculations, utility assessments, energy models, design reports, code evaluations, plans, P&IDs, schedules, specifications, and installation details.
• Manage mechanical discipline scope, budgets, priorities, and design activities across studies, schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration.
• Coordinate designs with architects, engineers, clients, construction managers, subcontractors, vendors, manufacturers, and trade partners.
• Support construction through RFI responses, submittal reviews, punch lists, field surveys, and progress reporting.
• Lead quality checks, act as Engineer-of-Record on qualifying projects, mentor junior staff, and support proposals and internal training.

Requirements

• ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with a mechanical focus.
• At least 5 years of experience in an AEC firm.
• Professional Engineer registration in good standing.
• Experience designing HVAC, mechanical utility, and piping systems and performing engineering calculations.
• Ability to work in the hybrid model from within reasonable commuting distance of Atlanta, Georgia, and report onsite as needed.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design work and directing the work of others.

Nice to have

• Life sciences, pharmaceutical, biotech, laboratory, or food and beverage industry experience.
• Experience with GMP environments, plumbing design, field surveys, troubleshooting mechanical systems, and applicable mechanical, plumbing, fire, and building codes.
• Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and Bluebeam Revu.
• LEED, WELL, or other sustainable design accreditation or experience.
• Experience with ASHRAE, SMACNA, ISPE, FDA, ISO, NFPA, OSHA, Revit plugins, Dynamo, Grasshopper, or Rhino.
