Engineer 2, Automation Design (Mechanical)

Location: San Diego, California, United States; onsite role

Salary: $90,000–$135,000 annual base salary, plus eligible bonus, commission, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Design and modify manual, semi-automated, and automated manufacturing equipment and fixtures for fabrication, assembly, installation, documentation, and release.
• Translate NPI and manufacturing requirements into reliable, manufacturable design solutions.
• Support NPI product transfer and release into manufacturing, track issues, and implement corrective design actions.
• Perform tolerance analyses, troubleshooting, and failure analyses for assemblies.
• Collaborate with Process Engineering, Product Development, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing, Software, Validation, Quality, and EH&S.
• Deliver program milestones while developing creative solutions to complex manufacturing problems.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or an equivalent field, with typically 2–3 years of related experience; or a master’s degree with 1–2 years of experience.
• Knowledge of mechanical design principles, including form, fit, tolerance stack analysis, GD&T, drafting standards, FEA, design for assembly, and design for manufacturing.
• Experience designing mechanisms such as clutches, gear trains, cams, and linkages, or selecting motors, power transmission components, and sensors.
• Experience designing and troubleshooting electromechanical or mechatronic assemblies.
• Knowledge of machining, sheet metal forming, additive manufacturing, and injection molding.
• Fluency in SolidWorks or similar CAD software.

Nice to have

• Experience in biotech, medical device, or IVD manufacturing.
• Experience in FDA-regulated markets.
• Knowledge of statistical practices and methods.
