TL;DR
Senior Corporate Counsel (Higher Education): Providing strategic legal counsel to Covista’s U.S. higher education institutions and corporate functions with an accent on academic, student, regulatory, operational, and partnership matters. Focus on interpreting higher education laws, negotiating complex agreements, supporting agency and institutional reviews, and developing compliance strategies across Title IV institutions.

Location: Chicago, Illinois, United States. Hybrid schedule with four in-office days per week, Monday through Thursday.

Salary: $185,000–$205,000 per year, adjusted based on experience, training, geographic location, licensure, certifications, market factors, budget, and responsibility.

What you will do

  • Provide strategic legal counsel on administrative, academic, operational, regulatory, and strategic matters for hirify.global’s Title IV institutions and corporate functions.
  • Advise student affairs, deans, registrars, disability services, and other departments on student conduct, academic integrity, disability accommodations, student records, and academic policies.
  • Interpret higher education laws, regulations, rulings, and guidance, including requirements related to Title IX, Title VI, Section 504, FERPA, and federal higher education policy.
  • Negotiate, draft, and advise on domestic and international strategic partnership agreements, clinical affiliation agreements, and other institution-specific agreements.
  • Support institutional reviews of student matters and prepare written responses for federal and state agencies and other external stakeholders.
  • Develop compliance strategies, monitor emerging legal developments, deliver training, and collaborate with Regulatory Affairs, Data Privacy, and Litigation teams.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • 10+ years of experience as a practicing attorney, including substantive experience in education.
  • Experience with the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights, state human rights departments, and higher education accreditors and regulators.
  • Experience negotiating partnership agreements and/or clinical affiliation agreements.
  • Active license and good standing with a U.S. state bar required.
  • Strong legal research, writing, communication, judgment, problem-solving, relationship management, and leadership skills.
