Senior Staff Software Engineer (Bioinformatics)

Location: Remote. Employees living within 50 miles of Palo Alto, California must work in the office 1–2 designated days per week.

What you will do

• Define the long-term technical strategy and architectural vision for bioinformatics pipeline systems.
• Lead system architecture, high-stakes design reviews, and complex technical tradeoff decisions.
• Design data hand-off and integration architecture between software systems.
• Establish engineering standards for SDLC rigor, code quality, testing, requirements, risk analysis, and verification.
• Own the pipeline team's DevOps strategy, including cybersecurity, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, deployment automation, observability, and environment management.
• Partner with data scientists, laboratory staff, program management, and engineering leadership on production software, roadmaps, dependencies, risks, and team development.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related field, plus 10+ years of relevant experience; equivalent requirements are 8+ years with an MS or 5+ years with a Ph.D.
• Experience setting long-term technical strategy and architectural standards across multiple teams or systems.
• Advanced experience designing and implementing cloud infrastructure for scalable, high-performance computing applications; AWS is preferred.
• Expertise in Python and strong proficiency in at least one compiled language: Rust, Java, C++, or C#.
• Experience with data integration patterns, software contracts, agile development, Jira, Git, and modern CI/CD pipelines.
• Exposure to life sciences, including DNA sequencing, quantitative genetics, bioinformatics, or data science.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of regulated software standards including IEC 62304, ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR Part 11, and ISO 14971.
• Experience in an early-stage or high-growth company.
