Lead Engineer (Data Centres)

Location: Tokyo, Japan. The role includes regular time on project sites across Japanese data centre projects.

What you will do

• Implement and adapt engineering and design standards for Japanese data centre projects, reviewing and approving requested deviations.
• Deliver hands-on mechanical and electrical engineering across feasibility, site appraisal, detailed design, tender specifications, construction, commissioning, and handover.
• Define project-specific design scopes and briefs, prepare executive summaries, and select and manage design consultants.
• Coordinate design compliance with Japanese laws and codes, including the Building Standards Act, Fire Service Act, and Electricity Business Act, as well as authorities and utility providers.
• Manage and witness on-site commissioning with the independent commissioning agent.
• Provide customer engineering support, manage Project Board submissions, and collaborate with the Engineering & Design Centre of Excellence on standardisation.

Requirements

• Extensive hands-on experience delivering mission-critical, 24/7 data centre projects across all project stages.
• Knowledge of Japanese codes, standards, and approval processes for data centre design and construction.
• Experience working with Japanese design consultants, contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction.
• Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to communicate engineering principles clearly while managing detailed deliverables.
• Native-level Japanese communication skills in writing and speaking.
• Business-level English communication skills.

Nice to have

• Professional Engineer registration (Gijutsushi) or an equivalent qualification.
