Principal System & AI Safety Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote; U.S. work authorization required. Employment sponsorship is not available.

Annual base salary: $200,000–$215,000.

What you will do

• Lead system safety work for autonomous and complex systems, addressing novel hazards, operational uncertainty, and software- and AI-driven behavior.
• Use Guardian AI to strengthen PHA, FHA, SHA, FTA, FMECA, STPA, and HARA analyses.
• Evaluate AI-generated outputs for rigor, traceability, completeness, and alignment with applicable standards.
• Advise on CONOPS, ODDs, hazard controls, safety requirements, mitigations, and verification strategies.
• Turn recurring customer problems into reusable workflows and Guardian AI product capabilities.
• Develop connected digital safety cases and contribute to research, standards, publications, and industry discussions.

Requirements

• Strong accomplishment record in system safety across high-consequence programs, influential research, or technical leadership.
• Expertise in PHA, FHA, SHA, FTA, FMECA, STPA, HARA, or related methods.
• Experience with MIL-STD-882E, JSSSEH, ISO 26262, ISO 21448/SOTIF, ARP4761, or DO-178C.
• Experience developing safety requirements, plans, safety cases, assessment reports, or comparable assurance artifacts.
• Ability to move between detailed analysis, system architecture, customer strategy, and product design.
• U.S. work authorization is required; employment sponsorship is unavailable.

Nice to have

• PhD or equivalent experience in system safety, systems engineering, robotics, controls, computer science, AI/ML, human factors, or a related field.
• Experience with autonomous systems, ML safety, AI assurance, behavioral safety, or adaptive systems.
• Startup, product, advanced research, or zero-to-one development experience.
• Familiarity with digital engineering, MBSE, Cameo, or digital safety cases.
• CSP, CFSE, CFSP, or a related certification.
