TL;DR
Meteorological Scientist - Data Assimilation and NWP (Weather Forecasting and Balloon Observations): Improving numerical weather prediction and forecast quality by incorporating WindBorne’s balloon observations into traditional and AI-based data assimilation, with an accent on observational analysis, quality control, and statistical verification. Focus on developing data assimilation techniques, validating in-situ observations, designing scientific visualizations, and communicating findings to scientific, government, and business stakeholders.

Location: Redwood City or Redwood Shores, California, or Washington, DC; in-person work preferred.

Salary: $110,000–$150,000 per year, adjusted based on experience and background.

hirify.global develops weather intelligence using data from its proprietary balloon constellation, WindBorne Atlas, to improve forecasting and climate-related decision-making.

What you will do

  • Evaluate and optimize the impact of balloon observations in traditional and AI-based data assimilation.
  • Collaborate with the Machine Learning team to advance AI-based techniques for the WeatherMesh AI forecast system.
  • Design visualizations and analyses demonstrating how in-situ observations affect forecast quality.
  • Refine and develop quality-control algorithms for balloon observations.
  • Communicate technical findings to scientific, government, and business stakeholders.
  • Work with scientists, engineers, and flight controllers across the observation lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Strong background in atmospheric sciences and weather analysis.
  • Experience with data assimilation, numerical weather prediction, and observational data from radar, satellites, surface, and upper-air sources.
  • Strong understanding of statistical methods for validating observation quality and verifying weather forecasts.
  • Experience using LLMs to implement code.
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, or a related field preferred.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar domains quickly and work with a scrappy, hands-on approach.

Nice to have

  • Experience with GSI, JEDI, GFS/FV3, or MPAS.
  • Scientific programming experience in Python, Fortran, or C/C++.
  • Experience with weather-observation instrumentation, including design, calibration, and quality control.
