Postdoctoral Fellow I (AI/ML)

Location: Boulder, Colorado; all work must be performed within the United States, excluding U.S. Territories

What you will do

• Conduct independent and collaborative research in satellite data assimilation and coupled atmospheric analysis and forecasting.
• Design and run cycling analysis and forecast experiments with the MPAS-GOCART2G-JEDI system to evaluate remote sensing observations.
• Develop or improve data collection, processing, postprocessing, visualization, and end-to-end cycling workflows.
• Explore innovative data processing and assimilation methods, including AI and machine-learning approaches, through targeted case studies.
• Analyze experimental results, diagnose system performance, evaluate forecast impacts, and recommend improvements based on quantitative verification.
• Prepare research findings for conferences, peer-reviewed publications, proposals, progress reports, and related documentation.

Requirements

• Ph.D. earned within the last five years or expected within the next six months in atmospheric science, computer science, statistics, or a related field.
• Knowledge of data assimilation algorithms, cycling experiments, satellite meteorology or cloud microphysics, and numerical weather prediction modeling.
• Experience with Python or shell scripting for testing and running workflows on supercomputers.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research environment.
• Strong scientific problem-solving, time-management, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
• Compliance with U.S. export control regulations and U.S. work-location requirements is required.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of remote sensing data assimilation.
• Knowledge of satellite retrieval processes.
