TL;DR
Diagnostics Engineer (Automotive): Architecting and implementing diagnostics infrastructure and tooling for self-driving and base vehicle systems with an accent on troubleshooting efficiency, subsystem analysis, and automotive diagnostics. Focus on designing diagnostics for sensing, compute, actuators, and support systems, identifying system gaps, and evolving diagnostics strategy for cloud-connected autonomous vehicles.

Location: Mountain View, California, United States; hybrid schedule with onsite visits to service centers and manufacturing facilities. Travel requirements: 10%.

Salary: $159,000–$196,000 USD annually, plus eligibility for an annual bonus, equity incentive plan, and company benefits.

What you will do

  • Architect and implement diagnostics infrastructure, tooling, and processes for self-driving and base vehicle systems.
  • Collaborate with sensing, compute, actuator, and support-system experts on diagnostics design and improvements.
  • Lead analysis of subsystem diagnostics gaps and requirements to inform future investments.
  • Provide technical and organizational leadership for the diagnostics strategy.
  • Visit service centers and manufacturing facilities as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical, mechanical, computer, or computer science engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience developing or working adjacent to diagnostics in automotive, aerospace, or consumer electronics.
  • Hands-on experience with deployed hardware and software systems.
  • Broad knowledge across electrical, computer, software, and mechanical engineering, with the ability to quickly learn new technical areas.
  • Working knowledge of an object-oriented programming language such as C++ or Python.
  • Demonstrated experience driving diagnostics development for a module, system, or program.

Nice to have

  • Understanding of self-driving vehicle systems, including sensors, compute, wiring, power, actuators, chassis communication, and controls.
  • Automotive diagnostics experience with traditional J1979 OBD-II-style systems and modern software-defined, cloud-connected vehicles.
  • Familiarity with modern passenger vehicle control systems.
  • Ability to collaborate with technical and nontechnical teams to solve technical problems.
