Staff Hardware Reliability Engineer - Drive by Wire (Automotive): Designing and validating reliability tests for automotive drive-by-wire systems used in autonomous vehicles, including ECUs, actuators, and motors, with an accent on stress testing, environmental validation, and failure analysis. Focus on leading root-cause and corrective-action processes, analyzing reliability data, improving hardware designs against automotive standards, and guiding reliability engineers.

Location: Hybrid, with in-office work at least 3 days per week. Role locations are Mountain View, CA, or Pittsburgh, PA.

Salary: $181,000–$262,000 per year for Mountain View, CA; $163,000–$236,000 per year for Pittsburgh, PA. Additional annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits are available.

What you will do

  • Lead hardware reliability testing and validation for automotive drive-by-wire systems in autonomous vehicles, including ECUs, actuators, and motors.
  • Develop and monitor stress, environmental, and failure-analysis testing protocols.
  • Analyze failure data, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Prepare reliability reports and present findings and hardware-improvement risks to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with hardware, systems, electrical, firmware, mechanical, software, manufacturing, and external partner teams.
  • Mentor reliability engineers and drive adoption of reliability best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of hardware reliability engineering experience, preferably in automotive, aerospace, or heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Strong knowledge of hardware design, reliability testing, HALT/HASS, vibration, thermal cycling, humidity, and failure analysis.
  • Experience with joint development partners, systems and software teams, and hardware/software interactions.
  • Experience leading root-cause analysis and corrective-action processes such as 8D, 5-Why, and Fishbone.
  • Proficiency with data-analysis tools such as Python and JMP, plus familiarity with Weibull++, dFMEA, reliability prediction, and assurance methods.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of ISO 26262, ISO 16750, and other automotive safety standards.
  • Experience with automotive electronics, ECUs, compute hardware, thermal and power reliability, or connector reliability.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers or Tier-1 suppliers on PPAP and supplier corrective actions.
  • Mentoring experience and knowledge of test automation and infrastructure.
