Backend Solutions Architect (Distributed Systems)

Location: 100% remote within the United States

Salary: $100,000–$150,000 annually

What you will do

• Design and implement large-scale, high-throughput distributed backend systems using Java, Go, Scala, or similar languages.
• Architect data partitioning, replication, consistency, APIs, event-driven services, and scalable data stores.
• Optimize latency, throughput, reliability, and cost through profiling, benchmarking, load testing, and capacity planning.
• Build observability and failure-handling capabilities, including structured logs, metrics, tracing, retries, circuit breakers, bulkheads, and saga workflows.
• Lead architecture reviews, technical design discussions, trade-off analyses, incident response, and post-incident learning.
• Mentor engineers, partner with SRE and platform teams, shape long-term architecture strategy, and maintain technical documentation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
• 6+ years of professional backend engineering experience with significant distributed-systems experience.
• Strong programming skills in Java, Go, Scala, or similar high-performance languages.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems concepts, including consensus, replication, and CAP trade-offs.
• Hands-on experience with Kafka or similar high-throughput messaging systems, SQL, relational and NoSQL data stores, and AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Strong debugging, root-cause analysis, communication, documentation, and mentorship skills.

Nice to have

• Experience leading complex technical initiatives across multiple teams.
• Production experience with Kubernetes-based platforms and service-mesh technologies such as Istio or Linkerd.
• Familiarity with chaos engineering practices and tools.
• Open-source contributions to relevant distributed-systems projects.
