Senior Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote from South Africa, Gauteng

Building digital infrastructure for grant funding through a SaaS platform that combines funding research, AI-supported analysis and application drafting, expert review, and grant management.

What you will do

• Build and ship end-to-end product features across the user interface, backend, infrastructure, and AI pipeline.
• Work directly with the grant team to identify user problems and take solutions from discovery through production deployment.
• Improve workflows, automation, and usability for grant writers to reduce the time required to prepare and submit applications.
• Build and operate production AI pipelines using prompt engineering, context management, model selection, cost control, and multi-provider setups.
• Operate, monitor, and debug production systems using AWS, ECS, RDS, Sentry, CloudWatch, and Postgres performance monitoring.
• Shape the technical architecture, engineering standards, code quality, and technical roadmap as one of the first engineering hires.

Requirements

• Several years of professional experience with TypeScript and Node.js.
• Strong Postgres experience, including JSONB, query performance, and migrations.
• Full-stack experience with Next.js, React Query, Express, BullMQ, AWS ECS/RDS, and Terraform.
• Hands-on experience building and operating AI pipelines and AI-powered applications in production, including prompt engineering, context management, model selection, and AI evaluation.
• Strong debugging skills in live production systems, with a high level of autonomy and ownership.
• German language skills at B1 level or above are required; the product and customers are German-speaking.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI agents and tool-calling workflows in production.
• Familiarity with AI-native development tools such as Claude Code or Cursor.
