Summer 2027 Surety Claims Intern (Insurance)

Location: Des Moines, Iowa, 1100 Locust Street

Salary: $23–$50 per hour national hourly internship range; actual placement depends on qualifications, role scope, location, and labor-market conditions.

What you will do

• Review new and existing surety claim demands from claimants and legal counsel.
• Analyze bond terms, conditions, and supporting claimant documentation.
• Review principals’ positions and assess potential legal defenses and surety obligations.
• Manage outside legal counsel and review draft pleadings for surety-bond litigation.
• Make preliminary claim-validity determinations and recommend resolution or exposure-mitigation steps.
• Provide business-support advice to surety underwriters on claim-related risks.

Requirements

• Pursuing a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
• Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to evaluate work-related problems and recommend solutions.
• Ability to communicate with internal and external contacts at all levels.
• Student activities involvement and/or some work experience.
