TL;DR
Senior Associate Scientist, Upstream Process Development (Bioprocess Automation & Digitization): Developing mammalian cell culture processes and application-layer software for automated bioprocess control with an accent on bioreactor integration, instrument drivers, and real-time process data. Focus on designing control schemes, integrating PAT instruments, troubleshooting scale-down experiments, and supporting deployed automation software across laboratory operations.

Location: On premise in Andover, Massachusetts, United States. Occasional weekend work and travel may be required.

Annual base salary: $68,600–$114,300, plus eligibility for a 7.5% bonus target.

What you will do

  • Run mammalian cell culture experiments in shake flasks, bench-top bioreactors, and high-throughput systems.
  • Translate upstream process knowledge into control requirements, control schemes, alarms, and user-interface elements.
  • Integrate and support bioreactor control systems, automated cell counters, Raman and capacitance probes, and other laboratory instruments.
  • Develop, test, deploy, monitor, and support application-layer software on an OPC UA-based bioprocess automation platform.
  • Act as a technical owner and digital subject-matter expert while collaborating with scientists, automation and controls engineers, equipment vendors, and platform owners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2–4 years of industrial experience, or Master’s degree with 0–2 years of industrial experience, in a relevant engineering, biology, or computer science field.
  • Working knowledge of at least one programming language and substantial delivered software; published source code is welcome.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience, including cell culture or protein purification in an academic or industrial laboratory.
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, written and verbal communication, and ability to explain technical decisions to non-programmers.
  • Permanent authorization to work in the United States is required; U.S. work visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

  • Application or backend development using Git, REST APIs, Streamlit, asynchronous programming, databases, data pipelines, Docker, Linux, or GitHub Actions.
  • Experience with OPC UA, Modbus, serial/TCP interfaces, embedded systems, device drivers, PLC/DCS platforms, or middleware such as Kepware.
  • Experience with fed-batch or perfusion bioreactors, AMBR systems, process control strategies, PAT integration, and data-driven optimization.
  • Experience operating laboratory, analytical, bioreactor, automation, or process-control instrumentation and working with vendors.
