Staff Software Engineer, Runtime (Quantum Computing)

Location: Based at the Oxford, England, United Kingdom office, with the option to work remotely a few days per week. Travel up to 5%.

What you will do

• Collaborate with experimental scientists to understand requirements and implement real-time control system behaviours.
• Develop abstractions over real-time control hardware for reproducible ion control with nanosecond-level precision.
• Implement drivers for real-time devices and develop the execution environment for user programs.
• Shape core Rust libraries, APIs, and the execution model of quantum computers.
• Build tooling that enables rapid and reliable iteration for internal users.
• Coordinate with orchestration, non-real-time control, compiler, FPGA, electronics, and science teams to integrate the wider system architecture.

Requirements

• Strong programming skills in one or more mainstream programming languages.
• Experience with systems programming and software system design.
• Experience with real-time Linux, embedded systems, or another low-latency computing environment.
• Interest in or experience with Rust.
• Strong communication skills across software and scientific disciplines, with comfort working amid rapidly evolving requirements.
• Experience producing high-quality code reviews, testing, and maintainable code.
