What you will do
- Observe, record, transmit, and disseminate surface weather observations under Federal, Department of Defense, and World Meteorological Organization guidelines.
- Record, transmit, and archive METAR, SPECI, and synoptic observations in support of the Global Climate Observing System.
- Prepare balloon, radiosonde, and ground-tracking equipment for the upper-air program.
- Launch and track rawinsonde packages and evaluate atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind data.
- Assist weather forecasters with station forecasts, helicopter and visual flight rules briefings, WEAX, and recreational safety weather briefings.
- Maintain safety, compliance, documentation, and quality standards while working independently and with a team.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED and at least four years of experience as a qualified surface weather observer.
- At least two years of experience at an aviation weather facility.
- At least one additional year of observing experience in Antarctica is required.
- A valid United States passport is required.
- Must be able to obtain a T1 government clearance and pass internal background checks.
- Must pass medical and dental examinations and a physical qualification before deployment to Antarctica; the work involves extreme cold and dark environments.
