Senior Software Engineer (Distributed Databases)

Location: In-office in Austin, Texas; Seattle, Washington; or London, UK

Salary: $185,000–$254,000 annual salary for eligible hires in New York City, New Jersey, Washington, Washington, DC, and California excluding the Bay Area.

What you will do

• Own distributed database systems running across hirify.global’s edge network and powering R2, Durable Objects, and Workers KV.
• Develop database features and extensions for stateful services.
• Maintain correctness through code review, testing, staged rollouts, and production ownership.
• Tune performance and resource utilization across staging and production environments.
• Optimize data placement, replication, schema design, and query performance across failure domains.
• Build observability and operational tooling for database consumers.

Requirements

• Source-code experience contributing to a distributed database or distributed storage system.
• Strong programming skills in Go, Rust, C++, or another systems language, with willingness to work productively in Go.
• Deep knowledge of distributed systems, including consensus protocols, replication, MVCC, transaction isolation, fault tolerance, and partition tolerance.
• Experience debugging and modifying complex codebases involving concurrency, durability, and consistency.
• Experience building high-throughput, low-latency systems and understanding network fundamentals relevant to distributed storage.
• Experience with infrastructure as code, monitoring, analytics, and production database operations.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with LSM-tree storage engines such as RocksDB, LevelDB, Pebble, or SlateDB.
• Knowledge of block devices, filesystems, and SSD characteristics.
• Experience with Saltstack, Terraform, Prometheus, Grafana, or ClickHouse.
