Staff Backend Engineer (ClimateTech)

Salary: $184,000–$225,000 per year

What you will do

• Design, build, and deploy robust backend services, data pipelines, and highly available APIs.
• Own the full data path from ingestion and transformation through APIs and customer-facing use.
• Prototype rapidly, evaluate hypotheses, and harden validated solutions for enterprise-scale adoption.
• Make architectural decisions, identify weak points, and improve platform scalability and reliability.
• Contribute to DevOps and SRE work, including operational readiness and production stability.
• Set backend engineering standards, mentor engineers, and lead initiatives spanning multiple services, pipelines, and teams.

Requirements

• Extensive professional backend engineering experience at staff level, with a record of setting technical direction independently.
• Experience owning work end to end, from database schema and APIs through integration tests and production monitoring.
• Ability to ship high-risk changes with rollback plans, test plans, and proactive stakeholder coordination.
• Infrastructure as code, CI/CD, observability, and incident response experience.
• Daily use of agentic engineering tools and experience deploying AI-augmented software systems to production.
• Experience building shared packages, tooling, and documentation, and collaborating with product managers, scientists, and customer-facing teams.

Nice to have

• Interest in carbon, climate strategy, and energy.
• Experience with regulated environments such as ISO 27001 or SOC 2.
• Experience with durable execution for long-running agents, quantified reliability evaluations, scoped permissions in agent tool calls, and prompt-injection defense.
