Staff Software Engineer, Safety Experience

Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States

Salary: $248,000–$310,000 US base salary annually, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead development of high-impact, user-facing safety products.
• Own complex projects end-to-end, defining milestones, dependencies, and technical solutions.
• Design, build, and deploy production APIs, backend services, and data pipelines.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, Policy, Data Science, ML, Legal, and Trust & Safety Operations.
• Drive engineering excellence through architecture guidance, code contribution, mentoring, and best practices.
• Respond to evolving abuse and regulatory compliance challenges.

Requirements

• 8+ years of relevant industry experience delivering complex, high-impact projects.
• Strong Python and backend API framework experience with Flask or Django.
• Strong JavaScript, React, and TypeScript experience for web and mobile platforms.
• Significant experience in safety or anti-abuse systems and trust and safety challenges at scale.
• Experience making independent technical decisions, leading large projects, reviewing code, and addressing security, performance, and scalability risks.
• Experience with metrics and dashboards such as Datadog, Mode, or Faros, plus experience using AI tools such as Claude Code and Cursor.

Nice to have

• Experience with Cassandra, Postgres, ScyllaDB, Kafka, or Pub-Sub.
• Experience building and operating native iOS and Android features.
• Experience designing monitoring strategies and production on-call processes.
• Knowledge of Go, Rust, or Elixir.
