Engineering Manager – Applied AI

Location: Los Angeles, CA, United States

Salary: $220,000–$300,000 annually, plus potential stock options and benefits for full-time hires.

What you will do

• Lead, hire, develop, and retain the Applied AI engineering team while maintaining a high technical bar.
• Set technical direction and prioritize the highest-leverage engineering workflow problems.
• Review architecture, solve difficult technical problems, and contribute to implementation.
• Partner with licensing, safety, design, manufacturing, and other engineering teams to identify opportunities for AI-driven improvements.
• Establish scalable processes for project selection, prototyping, evaluation, and production handoff.
• Communicate technical direction, progress, and tradeoffs to leadership and cross-functional partners.

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software engineering or applied AI experience.
• 2+ years of experience managing, mentoring, or growing software or applied AI engineers.
• Experience building and shipping software with LLMs, AI agents, or other modern AI techniques.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and proficiency in Python.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, physics, chemistry, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related technical field.
• Ability to work extended hours and weekends when necessary.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with LLMs, RAG, tool-use architectures, and AI agents.
• Strong technical judgment across multiple engineering disciplines.
• Experience improving engineering workflows and building high-agency teams.
• Experience adding structure and process to small, high-context engineering teams without reducing speed or autonomy.
