Senior Database Migration Engineer (PostgreSQL)

Location: Mississauga, Ontario, Canada; hybrid working model. The role includes planned weekend cutovers, with availability required for 30–50% of weekends with advance notice.

Salary: CAD 118,000–148,000 annual base salary, depending on experience, skills, education, training, and location.

What you will do

• Design and execute end-to-end migrations from Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL on hirify.global Cloud, including planning, dry runs, cutover, and post-go-live stabilization.
• Optimize data transfer and database performance through query plan tuning, indexing, partitioning, batching, and connection and throughput optimization.
• Develop and improve migration scripts, utilities, pipelines, and automation using Bash, Python, workflow tools, and related technologies.
• Configure replication technologies such as AWS DMS, SQL Server transactional replication, and Oracle GoldenGate to support phased, high-volume, and low-downtime migrations.
• Troubleshoot database, application, network, performance, and connectivity issues with PDO, Professional Services, and cloud operations teams.
• Define and execute data validation, control, and reconciliation processes, while using AI-assisted tools to accelerate analysis and tooling development.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related STEM field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of database engineering experience, including at least 2 years of production database migration experience.
• Hands-on expertise with Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, schema design, indexing, query analysis, performance tuning, and database operations.
• Proficiency with UNIX/Linux administration and Bash or Python scripting for migration, monitoring, and validation automation.
• Experience with AWS or Azure, cloud and hybrid networking, connectivity troubleshooting, and data replication technologies.
• Clear written and spoken English and availability to work 30–50% of weekends with advance notice are required.

Nice to have

• Experience with Terraform, environment automation, or infrastructure as code.
• Programming experience with Java, Kotlin, C, or Go.
• Experience with GitHub Actions, Argo Workflows, KubeVela Workflows, Temporal, Jira, and Git.
• Background in SaaS, mission-critical, high-availability, financial services, or insurance technology environments.
• Experience with large-scale, multi-tenant cloud platforms and data-intensive workloads.
