Staff Engineer - User Experience (Backend)

Location: Fully remote, open to candidates based in Ontario, Canada; collaboration across Pacific and Eastern time zones.

Base salary: CAD 180,000–210,000 per year, depending on experience and geographic location.

What you will do

• Lead the design and modernization of patient-facing backend services and APIs.
• Drive API-first architecture, including BFF and orchestration patterns, and govern API contracts and cross-service communication.
• Design event-driven workflows with AWS EventBridge and asynchronous messaging.
• Improve the reliability, fault tolerance, observability, and scalability of email, SMS, and notification pipelines.
• Design secure systems for sensitive patient and identity data, including consistent authentication and authorization across APIs.
• Mentor engineers, influence architectural decisions, and collaborate with Product, Architecture, Security, QA, Clinical, and Frontend teams.

Requirements

• 10+ years of backend engineering experience, including platform or high-scale distributed systems.
• Strong experience with Python and modern backend frameworks such as FastAPI or Flask.
• Deep experience with event-driven AWS architectures, including EventBridge, SQS/SNS, Lambda, and ECS.
• Experience with asynchronous task processing, REST or GraphQL APIs, microservices, service boundaries, and asynchronous service-to-service communication.
• Experience with observability, secure authentication and authorization, Postgres, DynamoDB, Redis, Infrastructure as Code, and CI/CD.
• Must be legally authorized to work in Canada at the time of hire and must not require current or future employer visa sponsorship.

Nice to have

• Experience scaling communication platforms such as email delivery, SMS gateways, or notification orchestration.
• Familiarity with BFF patterns for React or modern frontend applications.
• Experience with contract testing frameworks such as Pact.
• Startup-to-scale-up experience and familiarity with healthcare, HIPAA, PHI/PII, ISO 27001, or ISO 13485.
