Associate Counsel (Insurance Defense)

Location: Remote, but within a commutable distance of Middletown or Syracuse, New York; travel is required for trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.

Annual salary: $104,550–$175,275.

What you will do

• Defend lawsuits filed in New York courts and handle first-party insurance defense matters.
• Research applicable laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.
• Provide opinions on liability, damages, and claim value for the Claims Department.
• Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, discovery, depositions, examinations before trial, and examinations under oath.
• Defend assigned matters through trial or dispositive hearings, as applicable.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree required.
• Admission to the New York Bar and an active license in good standing required.
• Two to six or more years of related litigation experience, including insurance defense and/or personal injury litigation.
• Ability to meet and maintain New York licensing and applicable continuing legal education requirements.
• Strong legal writing, organization, prioritization, multitasking, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Ability to learn and apply complex technical and procedural information.

Nice to have

• Civil litigation experience.
• Insurance defense-related litigation experience.
• Professional communication skills in person, by telephone, and in written correspondence.
