Senior Engineer Restraint System - Steering Wheels (Automotive)

Location: Newark, CA or Southfield, MI, USA. Applicants must have permanent authorization to work full time in the United States.

What you will do

• Own steering wheel design release across the full product lifecycle, from system specifications, sourcing, packaging, and drawing release through validation, ramp-up, manufacturing support, and post-SOP maintenance.
• Partner with design, attributes, digital, interior engineering, safety, and supplier teams to balance required features, mass, cost, quality, and user experience.
• Manage Tier 1 suppliers during engineering development and program timing, serving as the primary supplier interface.
• Support restraint system integration and use CAE inputs and results to optimize component design.
• Support crash tests and vehicle homologation, including ensuring correct part pedigrees for test and validation vehicles.

Requirements

• Senior-level automotive engineering experience with steering wheels, driver airbags, restraint systems, interior systems, or consumer mechatronics, preferably with an OEM or Tier 1 supplier.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of mechanics of materials, material properties, kinematics of solids, failure mechanics, metal forming, plastic injection molding, and related design rules.
• Experience with GD&T, tolerance stack analysis, CAD packaging, vehicle interfaces, and basic electronics and automotive networking.
• Ability to manage suppliers, communicate technical issues clearly, and provide efficient written and oral reporting.
• Permanent US work authorization is required; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• 5+ years of industry experience and ownership of at least one project from cradle to grave.
• Experience with program management, systems engineering, requirements management, CAE analysis, restraint integration, crash testing, and passive safety technologies.
• Experience with diagnostics, software-updatable ECUs, cybersecurity, software development, or interior product manufacturing.
• Knowledge of APQP processes, including 8D, DFMEA, DRBFM, GR&R, SPC, or Six Sigma Green/Black Belt certification.
