Engineering Manager - (ML) - Evaluation Platform

Location: Sydney NSW, Australia; the role is based in Sydney

Canva develops a design platform and provides AI infrastructure and tooling for AI features across the company.

What you will do

• Own and evolve the evaluation platform strategy across test-like evaluations, Arena comparative evaluation, production monitoring evaluations, and human labelling tooling.
• Lead and grow a team of 9+ engineers, primarily at senior level, through coaching, mentorship, feedback, hiring, and resourcing.
• Partner with AI feature teams, CORE leadership, researchers, and adjacent platform teams across the ML lifecycle.
• Drive large cross-team and cross-group initiatives from ideation through completion with autonomous decision-making.
• Own development methodologies, planning rituals, goals, and success metrics.
• Advocate for evaluation and ML engineering needs while building a culture of knowledge sharing.

Requirements

• Proven technical people leadership and mentorship experience, including work with senior and staff-level engineers.
• Experience with ML evaluation, LLM systems, or ML platform engineering, including understanding the challenges of evaluating generative AI.
• Experience designing and building complex distributed systems, ideally involving machine learning.
• Strong stakeholder management, problem-solving, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to balance technical leadership with people leadership and deliver large projects through others.
• Continuous learning mindset and interest in the evolving GenAI evaluation space.
