Principal Engineer - Software Systems (AI)

Location: Westminster, Colorado, United States; eligibility requires U.S. Person status, including U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, asylum, or refugee status.

Salary: $150,000–$200,000–$220,000 annually for positions based in Colorado; the role is incentive eligible.

What you will do

• Lead the technical design and delivery of complex software-intensive systems across cloud platforms, distributed systems, AI-enabled products, and mission software.
• Define system architecture, integration strategies, interfaces, system boundaries, and technical direction across multiple engineering teams.
• Translate ambiguous customer, mission, and business problems into scalable technical solutions.
• Lead architecture reviews and trade studies while making decisions across delivery, cost, maintainability, risk, and strategic flexibility.
• Drive system decomposition, dependency management, integration, validation, operational readiness, and customer adoption.
• Mentor senior technical leaders and influence engineering organizations through technical judgment rather than reporting authority.

Requirements

• U.S. Person status is required; U.S. citizenship is specifically listed as a qualification.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, systems engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
• Significant experience architecting and delivering large-scale software-intensive systems.
• Deep understanding of modern software architecture, distributed systems, APIs, cloud-native architectures, data flows, scalability, resiliency, observability, security, and operations.
• Experience leading major cross-functional initiatives, architecture reviews, technical trade studies, interface definition, integration strategies, and validation approaches.
• Ability to communicate with engineers, architects, product leaders, customers, senior leaders, and executives while creating alignment across teams.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud-native platforms, Kubernetes, distributed data systems, and event-driven architectures.
• AI-assisted software development and agentic engineering workflows.
• High-availability, mission-critical, geospatial, aerospace, defense, robotics, autonomous, or other complex mission domains.
• Systems-of-systems integration, developer platforms, platform engineering, or internal engineering infrastructure.
• Sovereign, on-premises, disconnected, hybrid, model-based, or digitally enabled systems engineering environments.
