VP of Research & Development (Quantum Hardware)

Location: Denver, CO, United States

Base salary: $180,000–$230,000 per year, plus performance bonuses and equity options.

What you will do

• Execute the R&D vision and scientific roadmap in alignment with executive leadership and product strategy.
• Own the R&D master schedule, product-aligned milestones, critical paths, risks, and resource allocation.
• Convert uncertain deep-tech research programs into predictable, managed engineering initiatives.
• Build, mentor, and manage a growing team of scientists and multidisciplinary researchers.
• Establish goals, OKRs, career paths, peer-review processes, and research prioritization frameworks.
• Lead government grant proposals, strategic partnerships, and external research programs.

Requirements

• PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Cryogenic Engineering, or a closely related field.
• 10+ years of experience in deep-tech environments, preferably involving hardware or cryogenic systems.
• 7+ years of experience managing scientists or multidisciplinary research teams.
• Experience managing R&D budgets exceeding $5 million.
• Ability to translate complex scientific research into scalable commercial applications.
• Adaptability and strong execution skills in high-growth startup environments.

Nice to have

• Experience securing and managing government grants or external research contracts.
• Experience with funding programs such as DARPA or DOE.
