Staff/Sr Staff Electro-Optic Codesign Engineer (Photonics)

Location: Boston, MA; Mountain View, CA; or Toronto, ON. Flexible hybrid workplace model.

Salary: $180,000–$260,000 USD per year, plus equity and other rewards.

What you will do

• Develop and maintain electro-optic link simulation models spanning photonic devices, optical propagation, channels, and BER.
• Build multiphysics co-simulation frameworks combining VPI Photonics, Lumerical, sax, Cadence Virtuoso/Spectre, and Verilog-A models.
• Execute corner analysis, Monte Carlo variation sweeps, and PVT studies to evaluate link margins and recommend specification improvements.
• Co-optimize transmitter drivers, receiver front ends, and photonic device interfaces with analog circuit designers.
• Define simulation-to-silicon closure methods, test protocols, and measurement sequences for Passage optical links.
• Diagnose photonic, electrical, and integration-related performance gaps and drive corrective design actions and architectural specifications.

Requirements

• PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Physics, or a related photonics discipline with 5+ years of experience, or MS with 8+ years of directly relevant industry experience.
• Deep knowledge of photonic device physics and optical link design, including silicon photonic modulators, Ge photodetectors, passive WDM components, optical amplifiers, and link topologies.
• Hands-on experience with photonic simulation tools such as VPI Photonics, Lumerical FDTD/INTERCONNECT, or equivalent tools.
• Experience with analog and mixed-signal simulation, optical link budgets, corner analysis, and simulation-to-measurement closure.
• High-speed laboratory experience with VNAs, S-parameter characterization, optical spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, BER testers, OMAs, and optical power meters.
• Python proficiency for simulation scripting, measurement automation, and statistical analysis, plus familiarity with SERDES equalization, CDR, and mixed-signal PHY co-design.

Nice to have

• Silicon photonics tape-out and post-silicon characterization experience, including PDK-level model correlation.
• Exposure to co-packaged optics, near-package optics, or optical I/O chiplet integration.
• Knowledge of optical communications DSP, FEC, PAM-4, NRZ, or coherent modulation trade-offs.
• Experience with Monte Carlo and statistical design methods for photonic-electronic co-design.
