What you will do

  • Design, simulate, and develop photonic components, including lasers, modulators, high-speed photodetectors, passive devices, and waveguide structures.
  • Contribute to photonic integrated circuit design and architecture evaluations.
  • Perform tolerance studies and design evaluations to improve performance, manufacturability, and reliability.
  • Support test chip implementation, layout coordination, tape-out preparation, fabrication collaboration, and silicon validation.
  • Analyze characterization data to identify performance trends, root causes, and design improvements.
  • Develop photonic device models, simulation workflows, automation tools, and test methodologies.

Requirements

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline with 2+ years of relevant experience, or a master’s degree in a related field with 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with high-speed photonic devices such as optical modulators or photodetectors.
  • Experience with photonic design and simulation tools such as Sentaurus, Silvaco, Lumerical, HFSS, ADS, or RSoft.
  • Experience with photonic device testing, characterization, and data analysis using MATLAB, Python, JMP, or similar tools.
  • Experience with photonic layout design using Cadence, KLayout, or comparable environments.
  • Ability to work on-site in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing silicon photonic modulators or detectors, including micro-ring modulators, heaters, carrier-injection devices, and passive waveguide structures.
  • Familiarity with advanced photonic materials such as BTO, TFLN, or III-V integration.
  • Understanding of high-speed electronic ICs, including TIAs, drivers, equalization, and DSP concepts.
  • Experience with optical link modeling, system-level performance analysis, and photonic devices operating at 100G+ data rates.
  • Semiconductor foundry development, customer-facing product development, publications, presentations, or patent experience.
