Senior Java Backend Engineer (Healthcare)

Location: Remote, limited to candidates permanently residing in the United States or Canada

What you will do

• Architect, build, and scale core Java backend services powering the consumer health platform.
• Design and maintain secure REST and event-driven APIs with authentication, authorization, auditing, and least-privilege controls.
• Build enterprise integration services for EMR/EHR systems such as Epic and MyChart using HL7 FHIR and SMART on FHIR.
• Support client-side integrations by developing JavaScript/TypeScript components, UI workflows, and integration hooks.
• Own CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, infrastructure as code, structured logging, observability, and incident response.
• Partner with Product, Design, and partner-facing teams to translate technical requirements into reliable solutions.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience building and operating production software, including distributed, high-throughput systems.
• Expertise in Java and modern Java ecosystems such as Quarkus or Spring Boot, concurrency, and microservices.
• Strong JavaScript/TypeScript knowledge and experience with client-side architectures and frontend integrations.
• Experience with EMR/EHR integrations and healthcare interoperability standards including FHIR, HL7, and SMART on FHIR; regulated-sector experience such as FinTech is also relevant.
• Experience with cloud-native services, AWS, Azure, or GCP, Kubernetes/Docker, and Terraform.
• Strong knowledge of OAuth2, OIDC, mTLS, JWT, secrets management, secure SDLC, observability, and technical documentation. A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with Databricks, Apache Spark, distributed data processing, data pipelines, or analytical workloads.
