TL;DR
Staff Backend Engineer (.NET/Java) (Core Platform, Runtime Services): Building foundational runtime services and shared infrastructure for Octopai’s data intelligence platform with an accent on distributed processing, workload orchestration, reliability, and performance. Focus on designing execution and scheduling layers, improving metadata ingestion and lineage computation, and operating Kubernetes-based services across SaaS and enterprise deployments.
Location: Budapest, Hungary; hybrid work arrangement

What you will do
- Design and implement core runtime services powering platform execution, analysis workflows, and operational stability.
- Build shared backend infrastructure, including service frameworks, job execution layers, scheduling, and platform abstractions.
- Improve scalability, reliability, performance, and fault tolerance for metadata ingestion and lineage computation services.
- Develop workload orchestration, lifecycle management, retry, fault-handling, and resource-optimization capabilities.
- Partner with DevOps and Cloud teams to deploy and manage services in Kubernetes-based and enterprise environments.
- Build observability foundations with logging, metrics, tracing, and troubleshooting tools while contributing to architecture, code reviews, and clean backend design.
Requirements
- 8+ years of backend or platform engineering experience with demonstrated Staff-level impact.
- Strong experience building scalable backend infrastructure, runtime systems, or distributed service platforms.
- Excellent programming skills in C# (.NET) and Java.
- Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, including SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or ArangoDB.
- Experience with messaging, caching, and coordination systems such as Kafka and Redis.
- Experience operating containerized services with Kubernetes and applying production reliability, observability, and operational best practices.
Nice to have
- Experience with workflow engines, distributed job execution systems, or large-scale runtime platforms.
- Background supporting hybrid SaaS and enterprise/on-premise deployments.
- Experience optimizing metadata-heavy or graph-based workloads.
- Knowledge of Elasticsearch, Solr, ingestion pipelines, enterprise compliance, or security constraints.
