Director, Safety (Pharmaceutical Safety)

Location: Onsite at the South San Francisco, California campus, United States. Relocation assistance is not available.

Salary: $169,600–$315,000 USD annually, with a potential discretionary annual bonus.

What you will do

• Provide strategic leadership and comprehensive oversight for physical safety programs across the pharmaceutical campus.
• Lead critical hazard management, process safety, regulatory compliance, incident investigations, and root-cause analysis.
• Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of safety professionals.
• Advise site senior and executive leadership on safety strategy and translate organizational priorities into actionable goals.
• Build relationships with SHE authorities, regulatory agencies, and cross-functional business partners.
• Develop multi-year safety strategies, environmental strategies, and contingency frameworks to reduce operational risk and support a zero-injury objective.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, physical science, life science, engineering, health and safety, or a related field.
• 12+ years of progressive experience in Safety, Health, and Environment roles within site or corporate functions.
• Strong experience with physical safety programs in high-hazard or large-scale manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology environments.
• Deep knowledge of physical safety programs, facility operations, complex manufacturing systems, Cal/OSHA, OSHA, and local regulatory requirements.
• Advanced knowledge of incident command processes and experience solving difficult, complex safety problems.
• Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, negotiation, and regulatory engagement skills.

Nice to have

• Experience successfully leading safety teams.
• Certified Safety Professional certification or Registered Professional Engineer qualification.
