Senior Optical Engineer (Laser Systems)

Location: Milpitas, California, United States. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $111,850–$186,400 per year, plus eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus.

What you will do

• Design and engineer free-space and fiber-based laser systems, including oscillators, amplifiers, and harmonic conversion modules.
• Conduct experiments, feasibility studies, modeling, and testing for new and modified optical designs.
• Define test strategies, build and test prototypes, document technical data, and prepare reports and design documentation.
• Specify, select, and qualify active and passive optical components and test instrumentation.
• Develop and benchmark system performance models and implement opto-electronic measurement procedures.
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams on detailed design, testing, prototype fabrication, and production transfer.

Requirements

• BS degree with 4+ years of industry experience, MS degree with 2+ years of industry experience, or a PhD in a related field.
• Hands-on experience aligning free-space beams and optical cavities for continuous-wave and pulsed laser systems.
• Experience with diode-pumped pulsed solid-state lasers, amplifiers, Q-switched laser cavities, acousto-optic and electro-optic modulators, and pulse selectors.
• Ability to independently define and perform opto-electronic measurements, evaluate results, and communicate conclusions clearly.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Eligibility to work in the United States is required; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• Experience with beam analyzers, power meters, autocorrelators, fast opto-electronics, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, spectrometers, and scanning interferometers.
• Knowledge of laser cavity modeling, laser dynamics, Gaussian beam propagation, and ray-tracing analysis.
• Experience with harmonic generation, nonlinear crystals, SNLO, Matlab, Python, and automated measurement and control methods.
• Product development experience, including manufacturability, lifecycle management, and design transfer to production.
