Staff Photonics Design Engineer - Lasers

Location: Boston, MA or Mountain View, CA; flexible hybrid workplace model

Salary: $200,000–$225,000 USD per year, plus equity grants and other rewards.

What you will do

• Design and optimize silicon photonic devices for laser systems, including couplers, muxes, rings, switches, and other active and passive components.
• Create layouts for device test structures and complex integrated photonic systems.
• Develop test plans, analyze characterization data, validate device performance, and troubleshoot issues.
• Collaborate with photonics, packaging, systems, and software teams to align device designs with product requirements.
• Build simulation, modeling, and testing methodologies to optimize performance across manufacturing variability.
• Develop new device architectures and publish photonics results at industry conferences.

Requirements

• PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, or a related discipline, plus 3 years of industry experience.
• Experience designing, laying out, and testing silicon photonics devices in a product development environment.
• Experience designing integrated silicon photonics components with Lumerical, Tidy3D, or equivalent tools.
• Proficiency in Python for modeling and data analysis.
• Experience with integrated lasers and SOAs.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with foundry PDKs and code-based GDS creation using GDSFactory or similar tools.
• Experience with optical and electronic test equipment, wafer-level testing, and statistical data analysis.
• Strong project execution skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and milestones.
