Staff Backend Software Engineer (Go/Python)

Location: London, United Kingdom; hybrid setup with remote flexibility and the option to work from anywhere temporarily.

What you will do

• Design and build distributed systems, services, and APIs for high-dimensional simulation data across data processing, model training, and inference.
• Build tools for automated, robust data ingestion and processing pipelines that power active learning loops.
• Architect and integrate storage solutions, data warehouses, and data lakes for complex simulations, multimodal data, and deep learning workloads.
• Deploy and support services across multiple production environments, including cloud, on-premises, and air-gapped customer environments.
• Define system architecture and make trade-offs across performance, reliability, cost, and developer experience; author and review Technical Decision Records and contribute to Technology Radar reviews.
• Own ambiguous cross-team work, collaborate with infrastructure and customer-facing teams, communicate with stakeholders, and mentor engineers while remaining hands-on.

Requirements

• Strong Kubernetes experience, including CRDs, Operators, and infrastructure configuration tools such as Helm or ArgoCD.
• Strong command of Go and working knowledge of Python. Experience across Kubernetes, Go, Python, and Rust is ideal.
• Experience deploying and supporting services in more than one production environment.
• ML platform experience or prior data science experience, with an understanding of how ML practitioners and researchers approach problems.
• Strong communication and organisational skills, with experience operating at senior or staff level or equivalent people leadership experience in a comparable engineering organisation.
• Experience mentoring or developing other engineers.
• Intellectual curiosity, proactive ownership, engineering excellence, comfort with ambiguity, and an adaptable startup-minded approach.

Nice to have

• Experience at an ML-focused startup or platform company, or infrastructure experience in a larger organisation combined with adaptability to a smaller, faster-moving environment.
• Comfort with Rust.
• Experience building and supporting software across cloud, on-premises, and air-gapped environments.
• Experience with big data systems and analytics at production scale.
• Side projects, open-source contributions, or independently built software.
