Staff Software Engineer (AI Platform)

Location: London, United Kingdom; hybrid working model with in-person collaboration and remote work. The role includes the opportunity to work hands-on in vehicle workshops and labs.

What you will do

• Own the technical vision, architecture and long-term direction of the end-to-end Data Enrichment Platform.
• Design, develop and operate backend services, APIs, model-execution workflows, versioned outputs, annotation capabilities and dataset catalogues.
• Make architectural decisions for petabyte-scale driving data and large GPU fleets, including data locality, scheduling, capacity, backpressure, failure recovery, observability and cost.
• Establish technical boundaries and ownership across model engineering, AI Platform, infrastructure, compute, storage and data teams.
• Lead cross-team delivery while remaining hands-on, mentoring senior engineers and improving software maintainability, testing and observability.
• Drive adoption of self-service capabilities and define measurable service levels and success metrics for reliability, throughput, cost, automation and adoption.

Requirements

• Experience owning the long-term technical direction of a complex, multi-system platform or capability, with measurable outcomes from architectural decisions.
• Strong production software-engineering experience in Python, building maintainable, tested and observable backend services, APIs and data-processing systems.
• Deep experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems for data-intensive or compute-intensive workloads.
• Experience turning internal platforms into widely adopted, reliable and usable self-service products.
• Excellent architecture and technology judgement, balancing immediate delivery needs with long-term platform direction.
• Experience leading delivery across organisational boundaries, influencing technical decisions and aligning teams around clear ownership and shared outcomes.
• Clear communication of complex ideas and experience mentoring senior engineers and strengthening technical capabilities.

Nice to have

• Experience with workflow orchestration, batch inference, ML platforms, model deployment or registries; relevant technologies include Flyte, Airflow, Dagster, Argo, Spark, Databricks, Ray, Kubernetes and GPU infrastructure.
• Experience with annotation or dataset-catalogue platforms, including provenance, versioning, lineage and quality control.
• Experience with production robotics or computer-vision platforms, including annotation, inference, evaluation and model monitoring.
• Computer-vision research expertise is not required.

Hiring process

• Initial 30-minute Talent Partner screening call.
• Competency interviews covering Python coding and system design, followed by technical leadership and Hiring Manager interviews.
• Final 45-minute mission, values and Staff-level calibration interview.
