Senior Software Engineer I (Java & Python)

What you will do

• Design, develop, and deploy applications in a cloud-hosted distributed system for the Submission and Editorial product portfolio.
• Build Document Intelligence services that transform unstructured scientific manuscripts into structured information through document transformation, metadata extraction, content enrichment, and entity recognition.
• Contribute to architectural decisions focused on stability, performance, security, and scalability.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to identify requirements and gather feedback.
• Partner with cross-functional Agile and DevOps teams and improve delivery processes.
• Own services throughout their lifecycle, including architecture, implementation, deployment, observability, operational support, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

• Proficiency in most of Python, Java, Spring or Spring Boot, and SQL, with willingness to learn the remaining technologies.
• Proficiency in distributed and event-driven solutions using Kafka and AWS cloud services.
• Experience with build tools, Git, and continuous integration using GitHub Actions or Jenkins.
• Experience supporting and mentoring team members, sharing knowledge, and helping others upskill.
• Experience with alerting, monitoring, and logging tools such as New Relic, OpenSearch or Kibana, and Coralogix.
• Experience with a modern IDE such as IntelliJ or VSCode and its refactoring tools.
• Some experience with test-driven development and mocking libraries such as Jest or Mockito.
• Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, data-processing workflows, scalable backend architectures, Agile practices including Scrum or Kanban, and cloud development using Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS.
• Familiarity with AI coding tools including Copilot, Claude, Codex, and antigravity; willingness to learn and work with AI-based solutions.
• Eagerness to learn and grow, openness to improving team working practices, and awareness of industry best practices and standards.
