R&D Engineer - Mass Timber Connections

Location: Remote, based in Canada; position associated with Surrey, British Columbia

Salary: $70,000–$115,000 CAD per year, depending on experience and qualifications.

What you will do

• Plan and execute applied engineering research involving structural connections, fasteners, timber systems, and product performance.
• Develop connection products from technical concepts through prototyping, testing, validation, and approval support.
• Perform structural calculations, analytical modelling, literature reviews, and code-based assessments.
• Plan and coordinate internal and external laboratory testing, including specimens, fixtures, instrumentation, and test setups.
• Analyze experimental data, identify trends and limitations, establish design parameters, and prepare defensible technical conclusions.
• Own assigned R&D projects, managing schedules, documentation, stakeholder communication, technical reports, and calculation packages.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Timber Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Approximately 2–6 years of experience in structural engineering, applied research, testing, product development, or building products.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or EIT status with the ability to pursue a P.Eng. designation in the near term.
• Strong understanding of structural mechanics, load paths, material behaviour, and fundamental engineering principles.
• Experience with engineering analysis tools, spreadsheets, CAD, or numerical modelling, plus strong technical writing and project-management skills.
• Proficiency in English is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with timber engineering, structural connections, fasteners, mass timber, or building products.
• Experience with physical testing, laboratory research, structural testing, or experimental engineering.
• Familiarity with CSA O86, NDS, Eurocode 5, ICC-ES, CCMC, AS/NZS, or comparable standards.
