Lead Software Engineer - Big Data

Location: Rockville, Maryland, United States; hybrid work with defined in-person presence requirements

Salary: $114,200–$207,200 for CO/FL/TX; $125,900–$228,000 for IL/PA; $131,200–$238,300 for MA/MD/VA/Washington, DC; $131,200–$248,700 for NY/NJ. Discretionary bonus may also be available.

What you will do

• Design and develop reliable, scalable software products and distributed data-processing solutions.
• Process and optimize petabyte-scale datasets using Hadoop, Spark, Hive, and Trino.
• Diagnose production issues involving data skew, resource limitations, job failures, and scalability.
• Improve software development environments, CI/CD pipelines, test automation, and engineering practices.
• Lead cross-functional initiatives involving AI adoption, technology transformation, and workflow optimization.
• Coach software engineers and communicate technical priorities with stakeholders and management.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline with at least 7 years of related experience, or equivalent training and experience.
• Extensive hands-on experience with Hadoop, Spark, Hive, and Trino, including Spark architecture and performance tuning.
• Advanced SQL skills and proficiency in Python or Scala, including scalable data-processing code, concurrency, and memory management.
• Strong experience with AWS services including S3, EMR, Glue, Lambda, Athena, and EKS.
• Strong system design, object-oriented development, data storage, performance optimization, DevOps, CI/CD, test automation, unit testing, and software security experience.
• Hands-on experience with AI development tools, prompt engineering, and AI workflow design.
