TL;DR
District Planning Advisor (Electrical Utility): Developing and managing plans for transmission, sub-transmission, and distribution facilities with an accent on utility design, environmental permitting, cost estimation, and system performance. Focus on leading multidisciplinary planning projects, reviewing complex designs, managing field and system risks, and maintaining accurate geospatial asset records.

Location: Goleta, California, US; hybrid work with required residence in California. Reports to an SCE facility for a set number of days, with remote work on remaining days. Requires up to 15% travel throughout the SCE service territory. Relocation does not apply.

Salary: $126,000–$189,000 per year

What you will do

  • Develop and design plans for transmission, sub-transmission, and distribution facilities, including resources, cost estimates, and construction options.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Engineering, Environmental, Construction, and other internal teams to deliver projects on schedule and in compliance with design and safety standards.
  • Lead environmental planning and permitting throughout project lifecycles and serve as the Operations point of contact during construction.
  • Provide technical direction, mentorship, training, workload oversight, and performance support for the planning team.
  • Review complex designs, planning and system performance studies, contractor job packets, and peer designs for quality, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Manage project risks, budgets, schedules, operating dates, field inspections, circuit mapping, and geospatial records for overhead and underground assets.

Requirements

  • At least five years of experience in electrical utility distribution, transmission, or telecommunication design; line construction; or an engineering discipline.
  • Valid Class C Driver’s License.
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering principles, construction standards, and industry practices.
  • Experience leading complex technical projects, reviewing designs, managing multiple projects under tight timelines, and coordinating cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with advanced design and planning tools such as AUD, SPIDA, AutoCAD, or Design Manager.
  • Must work and reside in California unless otherwise noted.

Nice to have

  • Experience managing customer or stakeholder interactions in technical, construction, or utility environments.
  • Experience resolving customer service issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for independently handling difficult stakeholder situations.
