Senior Data Engineer (AI)

Location: On-site in RTP, North Carolina, Monday through Friday; participation in an on-call rotation with occasional weekend or holiday support for production incidents, maintenance, or critical deployments.

Salary: $118K–$157K annual base pay, with potential bonus or incentives.

What you will do

• Architect, build, and maintain data pipelines integrating laboratory instruments, automation systems, sequencers, operational platforms, APIs, robotics platforms, databases, and file-based sources.
• Own data pipelines and models end to end, from design through production operation, while defining architecture and engineering standards.
• Develop advanced SQL and transformation logic to cleanse, standardize, and model raw instrument and production data.
• Build datasets for dashboards, analytics, process monitoring, troubleshooting, and governed AI-enabled workflows.
• Implement orchestration, testing, monitoring, alerting, and data validation to detect failures, freshness issues, schema changes, and incomplete processing.
• Collaborate with systems engineering, lab operations, data science, and automation engineering; mentor junior engineers and document systems for regulatory compliance.

Requirements

• BS/BA degree with 5+ years or a master's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or software development.
• Degree in computer science, mathematics, software engineering, data science, life sciences, physics, or a similar field.
• Advanced SQL skills, including performance optimization and complex transformation logic.
• Strong proficiency in Python, Rust, C++, or a comparable programming language.
• Understanding of ETL/ELT design, relational databases, data modeling, and structured or semi-structured data.
• Ability to work on-site in RTP, North Carolina, Monday through Friday, participate in on-call support, and collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience with Airflow, dbt, or comparable orchestration and transformation tools.
• Experience with AWS S3, Redshift, Glue, Snowflake, or comparable cloud data platforms and warehouses.
• Experience integrating AI or agentic tooling into the data engineering SDLC.
• Experience with semantic modeling, data lineage, automated data quality testing, mentoring, or technical leadership.
• Exposure to manufacturing, clinical laboratory operations, diagnostics, biotechnology, statistical methods, Git, APIs, file transfers, networking, or system integrations.
