Field Test Engineer (Defense Systems)

Location: San Diego, California, United States; hybrid workplace. The role requires travel up to 50% and an active U.S. security clearance.

Salary: $74,000–$150,000 per year, with ranges varying by experience, skills, and education.

What you will do

• Provide operational and maintenance support for deployed software and hardware infrastructure used in DoD and Navy testing and experimentation.
• Deploy, install, configure, and support new software and hardware infrastructure across test sites and Navy platforms.
• Coordinate with senior warfighters and government sponsors on installation checkouts, operational testing, and mission execution.
• Review software designs and create test plans and procedures.
• Troubleshoot discrepancies and coordinate cross-functional technical issues during test events.
• Train users and support operational monitoring, assessment, and corrective actions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or another STEM field, or equivalent professional experience.
• 1–3 years of related experience.
• Experience administering and troubleshooting Linux systems using command-line tools.
• Experience with software integration, testing, troubleshooting, and virtualized Linux environments.
• Experience deploying and managing VMware environments, including ESXi, vCenter, and virtual machines.
• Hands-on experience supporting applications and hardware in mission-critical operational environments, plus the ability to travel up to 50%.

Nice to have

• Experience with Navy surface warfare systems, Aegis Weapon System, CEC, Link16, or NAVSEA tactical applications.
• Experience testing complex distributed DoD software systems and laboratory environments.
• Knowledge of software engineering, IT, networking, and system integration.
• Experience running code or scripts in Python, Java, C++, or other programming languages.
