Sr. Staff Automation Engineer (Medical Devices) (Automated Assembly and Packaging): Leading the design, specification, installation, commissioning, and validation of advanced automated manufacturing equipment for disposable wearable medical devices with an accent on machine design, packaging technologies, and multi-site standardization. Focus on defining scalable system architectures, integrating robotics and mechatronics, managing supplier execution, and ensuring safety and regulatory compliance across global manufacturing programs.

Location: Onsite in Acton, Massachusetts, United States; ability to work on manufacturing floors and in cleanroom environments is required. Domestic and international travel may be required, up to 30%.

Annual base salary: $133,400–$200,075, with possible incentive compensation.

What you will do

  • Lead the specification, selection, acceptance, installation, startup, commissioning, and validation of automated assembly and packaging systems.
  • Design and deploy scalable automation solutions for current manufacturing operations, technology transfers, obsolescence programs, and new product development.
  • Provide system-level technical leadership for machine architecture, performance, reliability, cost, risk, and regulatory requirements.
  • Direct supplier engagement, design reviews, multi-workstream execution, and accountability for scope, schedule, cost, and performance.
  • Oversee FAT, SAT, IQ/OQ/PQ validation activities and drive consistent safety and compliance practices across programs and sites.
  • Mentor engineers and advance engineering standards, training, SOPs, design guidelines, technology roadmaps, and cross-site standardization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; a master’s degree is a plus.
  • 10–13+ years of hands-on machine design and automation experience, ideally in the medical device industry.
  • Experience leading large-scale or multi-line automation programs and supporting global manufacturing or multi-site deployments.
  • Expertise in mechanical machine design, pneumatics, linkage design, mechatronics, robotics, drive systems, assembly, and packaging technologies.
  • Experience with CAD modeling software, preferably SolidWorks, plus working knowledge of Minitab and/or JMP.
  • Ability to work onsite, operate in manufacturing and cleanroom environments, travel up to 30%, and lead cross-functional technical initiatives.

Nice to have

  • Experience with blister forming, cartoning, bagging, sealing, conveyor systems, ultrasonic welding, heat transfer decoration, hot stamping, laser welding, or laser decoration.
  • Experience applying CE, UL, SCCR, NFPA-70E/79, ISO, and other machine safety and regulatory standards.
  • Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
