Senior/Lead Backend Engineer (Kotlin)

Location: San Francisco, California, with hybrid work for Bay Area employees; fully remote work is available only within the United States. Local employees work from the SoMa office three days per week.

What you will do

• Deliver features independently across backend, infrastructure, and the frontend skeleton.
• Work with product, design, sales, founders, and customer-facing colleagues to define and ship solutions.
• Lead tradeoff discussions and clarify ambiguous requirements with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Write extensible, scalable, production-quality code and participate in code reviews.
• Lead or contribute to architecture reviews and technical design discussions.
• Improve engineering practices, share knowledge, and provide feedback on product, process, and culture.

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend development experience with Java, Go, Python, Node, or similar technologies.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Ability to work as a generalist, independently scope work, resolve ambiguity, and adapt to changing requirements.
• Experience collaborating directly with technical and non-technical stakeholders and explaining technical tradeoffs clearly.
• Experience with Kotlin or other JVM languages, asynchronous event-based systems, and production-grade code developed with AI coding tools.
