Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States; hybrid work arrangement

What you will do

• Own backend systems end to end, including architecture, implementation, deployment, and long-term maintenance.
• Design modular APIs and backend architectures using REST, gRPC, and event-driven patterns for enterprise and government environments.
• Break down complex problems into technical designs and deliver production-ready systems.
• Improve latency, throughput, and cost efficiency through profiling and system design.
• Collaborate with Product, ML, Infrastructure, and customer-facing teams to build reliable and developer-friendly systems.

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience building production systems.
• Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, including consistency, availability, failure modes, retries, and idempotency.
• Deep proficiency in Go, TypeScript, Rust, Python, or a similar language.
• Experience designing shared infrastructure, internal platforms, or developer-facing services from first principles.
• Experience owning services with uptime responsibility, observability tooling, incident response, and APIs operated at scale.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI/ML platforms, inference systems, or data-intensive pipelines.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud-native deployment.
• Exposure to multi-tenant, regulated, or government environments.
• Experience with real-time or streaming data systems.
