Director Underwriting (Health Insurance)

Location: Telecommuter; preferred in Western Washington, with telecommuter eligibility in the PST and MST zones. Hybrid work includes access to on-site resources and campus activities.

Salary: $157,900–$315,900 per year.

What you will do

• Set underwriting strategies, policies, and procedures that support long-term organizational goals.
• Partner with Sales and Account Management on client presentations, negotiations, renewals, and proposals.
• Collaborate with actuaries and the pharmacy division on pricing, formularies, and product design.
• Develop and maintain pricing data systems and sophisticated underwriting models.
• Oversee underwriting for the Alaska market, including stop-loss renewals for self-insured groups.
• Lead, recruit, hire, mentor, and develop a high-quality underwriting team.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Mathematics, or a related field, or four years of relevant work experience.
• Eight years of group medical underwriting or health insurance consulting experience, including five years managing teams.
• Substantial knowledge of the health insurance industry and group underwriting within an insurance carrier setting.
• Excellent negotiation and influencing skills, including the ability to reach mutually beneficial business solutions.
• Ability to work as a telecommuter in the PST or MST time zone.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in a related field.
• CEBS designation.
• Underwriting leadership experience in complex medium- to large-sized businesses.
