TL;DR
Manager, Thermal Control Systems (Aerospace): Leading the development of thermal and fluid system hardware for next-generation commercial space stations with an accent on system architecture, hardware lifecycle ownership, and human-rated reliability. Focus on guiding mechanical engineers, driving rapid prototyping and iterative testing, and integrating tubing, trays, and fluid loops through manufacturing, qualification, launch preparation, and on-orbit operation.

Location: Long Beach, California, United States; full-time onsite role with up to 5% travel. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required during critical mission phases. U.S. export control eligibility is required: the hire must be a U.S. person or otherwise eligible for deemed export licensing.

Salary: $154,980–$219,996 USD per year, depending on qualifications, skills, experience, business needs, and market demand.

What you will do

  • Lead and mentor a team of mechanical engineers developing thermal and fluid system hardware.
  • Set technical direction, prioritize development work, manage workloads, and support on-time delivery.
  • Own the architecture and performance of thermal control hardware, including tubing, trays, and fluid loops.
  • Guide hardware through design trades, manufacturing, qualification, launch preparation, and on-orbit operation.
  • Lead prototyping, iterative testing, systems engineering analyses, requirements development, and cross-team integration.
  • Conduct design reviews and ensure manufacturable hardware meets human-rated reliability and safety requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with fluid systems.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on hardware experience in fabrication, assembly, and/or testing.
  • At least 1 year of experience leading or mentoring engineers.
  • Ability to work in Long Beach, California, and meet U.S. export control eligibility requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving, root-cause analysis, communication, and leadership skills.

Nice to have

  • Experience leading hardware development in a fast-paced environment and owning mechanical or fluid systems across multiple development phases.
  • Experience with rotating machinery, first-principles engineering, and team-level trade studies.
  • Proficiency in NX, GD&T, tolerance analysis, FEMAP, or ANSYS.
  • Familiarity with machining, welding, brazing, and tube bending.
