TL;DR
Electronics Failure Analysis Engineer (Materials and Failure Analysis): Driving failure analysis investigations and materials characterization for the X-BAT vehicle with an accent on electronic failure mechanisms, laboratory methods, and corrective actions. Focus on operating SEM/EDS, X-ray and thermal-analysis equipment, preparing samples, and eliminating failure recurrence across design, manufacturing, and supply chain.

Location: Dallas, Texas, United States; on-site

Company

hirify.global develops the X-BAT vehicle and its associated hardware systems.

What you will do

  • Lead failure analysis investigations and materials characterization activities for the X-BAT vehicle.
  • Operate and improve laboratory capabilities including SEM/EDS, X-ray and CT inspection, optical microscopy, and cross-section preparation.
  • Analyze electronic failures and recommend corrective actions for metallic, ceramic, polymeric, and composite materials.
  • Apply 8D, fault-tree, fishbone, and FRACAS methods to identify failure mechanisms and prevent recurrence.
  • Perform dye-and-pry, CSAM, mechanical cross-sectioning, and thermal analysis using DSC, TGA, DMA, TMA, and FTIR.
  • Coordinate with design, manufacturing, supply chain, stakeholders, and external laboratories on materials and reliability decisions.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience in materials engineering, preferably in aerospace or automotive applications.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Reliability Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience operating SEMs, microscopes, and X-ray systems.
  • Knowledge of electronics, including PCBs, PCBAs, electronic components, and moving mechanical assemblies.
  • Knowledge of failure mechanisms such as solder fatigue, intermetallic growth, conductive anodic filaments, tin whiskers, electromigration, and corrosion.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary product development, technical project management, and IPC, JEDEC, MIL, and ASTM standards.

Nice to have

  • 5+ years of materials engineering experience or a master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience running a materials characterization or failure analysis laboratory.
  • Experience with environmental testing, including temperature cycling, vibration, HALT, and HASS.
  • Familiarity with PCB fabrication, SMT, and polymerics manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency in Python, including NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, Plotly, and Matplotlib.

Culture & Benefits

  • Hands-on laboratory work with advanced materials and electronics analysis equipment.
  • Collaboration across design, manufacturing, supply chain, and reliability engineering.
  • Responsibility for laboratory procedures, equipment maintenance, consumables procurement, organization, and safety.
  • Opportunity to educate stakeholders on materials science, materials selection, and processing practices.
