Body Department Controls Engineer (Robotics/Automation): Operating, troubleshooting, and improving automated body shop systems, robotics, controls, and plant-floor interfaces with an accent on equipment integration, commissioning, safety, and production reliability. Focus on diagnosing complex automation faults, launching new equipment, improving throughput and quality, and validating industrial control systems.

Location: Kansas City, Kansas, United States; full-time onsite presence required. The role includes shift rotation, weekend, shutdown, extended-hours, and occasional supplier or GM-site travel support. Relocation benefits may be available under company policy.

What you will do

  • Operate, troubleshoot, and improve automated body shop systems, controls, robotics, equipment interfaces, and plant-floor systems.
  • Design, program, integrate, install, commission, validate, and launch new or modified body equipment.
  • Maintain automation requirements, electrical drawings, control-panel documentation, software backups, network documentation, standards, and change records.
  • Coordinate with suppliers, contractors, maintenance, skilled trades, quality, safety, IT, and manufacturing engineering on equipment builds, testing, installation, and acceptance.
  • Improve equipment availability, throughput, first-time quality, process stability, energy performance, and material utilization through data-driven problem solving.
  • Support machine safety, risk reduction, preventive maintenance, technical training, production monitoring, traceability, DLA initiatives, and launch activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, controls, automation, computer, mechanical, manufacturing, or a related engineering discipline; an Associate’s degree with equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • Experience supporting industrial automation or controls in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, control-panel drawings, equipment specifications, and engineering documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex automation and equipment problems using data and structured problem-solving methods.
  • Strong communication, organization, project-management, collaboration, autonomy, and prioritization skills.
  • Must work onsite in Kansas City, Kansas, and must not require current or future GM immigration sponsorship.

Nice to have

  • Experience with PLCs, HMIs, industrial networks, drives, sensors, safety circuits, robotics, and electrical control systems.
  • Automotive manufacturing or body shop experience, including Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Industrial Ethernet, DeviceNet, motion control, or variable-frequency drives.
  • Fanuc robotics, vision systems, Fanuc 2D/3D, Keyence, or Photoneo experience.
  • Experience with commissioning, factory or site acceptance testing, production launches, manufacturing execution systems, Power BI, or automation-support tools.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, failure-mode analysis, process control plans, error proofing, data analytics, or change management.
